Biggest Mistakes People Make When Trying to Get Fit Without an Online Fitness Coach

I started coaching in 1998 when I was getting my Master’s Degree.

I Started our business,  Get You In Shape, in 2006. We have helped thousands of clients look and feel 10 years younger.  It comes down to a few simple things.

1. People need a plan.

2. People need a coach to help hold them accountable to following that plan.

We would love to help you look and feel 10 Years Younger.

If you’ve ever downloaded a fitness app, followed a meal plan for two weeks, then quietly stopped, you’re not alone. As an online fitness coach who has worked with clients across the country for over 25 years, I’ve seen this exact pattern play out hundreds of times. It’s rarely a willpower problem. It’s almost always the same three mistakes.

Mistake #1: Relying on Willpower Instead of a Plan

Willpower runs out by Wednesday. That’s not a character flaw, it’s just how motivation works. It’s high on Sunday night when you’re setting goals, and gone by Wednesday when work runs long and dinner needs to happen fast.

The people who actually stick with a program aren’t more disciplined than everyone else. They’re working with an online fitness trainer who has already mapped out a simple plan, so there’s nothing left to decide in the moment when motivation naturally dips. The plan does the thinking. They just have to follow it.

Mistake #2: Going Quiet the Moment Things Get Hard, and Nobody Noticing

This is the mistake I see most often, and it’s the one that actually ends most people’s progress.

Someone starts strong. Ten days in, they’re crushing it. Then one bad week hits, a busy stretch at work, a trip, a stressful few days, and they quietly stop. The app doesn’t notice. The meal plan sitting in their inbox doesn’t notice. Nobody reaches out. And that silence, more than the bad week itself, is what actually derails most people.

This is the single biggest difference between trying to get in shape alone and working with an online fitness coach. A real coach notices when you go quiet, and reaches out before a rough week turns into a lost month.

Mistake #3: Treating One Off Day Like Proof It’s Not Working

One skipped workout or one bad meal turns into “well, I already blew it,” and the whole week goes down with it.

But one meal is a data point, not a verdict. The people who actually get results aren’t the ones who never have a bad day. They’re the ones who have someone in their corner who says “good, that’s exactly what I needed to know,” instead of letting the guilt spiral take over and turn one off day into a full off week.

It Was Never a Willpower Problem. It Was an Alone Problem.

Every one of these mistakes comes back to the same root cause. Not a lack of information, not a lack of effort, just the absence of someone actually paying attention to how you’re doing, day after day.

That’s exactly the gap an experienced online fitness coach fills. Not another app to manage alone, not another plan explaining what protein is again, but a real person who notices, adjusts, and keeps you accountable the whole way through.
