What was your life like before Get You In Shape?
At the start of 2019, I weighed 350 pounds. I had not been active in decades. I had a few failed starts then decided to join Get You In Shape in January, 2019.
Why did you decide to join the Get You In Shape program?
I started on my own, working on my nutrition and doing some light cardio – like walking 30 minutes per day. I did that for a couple of months. I discovered that I needed more accountability for the exercises I did not enjoy, or really didn’t know how to do. I was referred to GYIS by a friend. I talked to Brad and decided this is what I needed to take it to the next level.
Walk us through your initial journey with Get You In Shape?
I was originally embarassed at where I had arrived at physically due to years of inactivity. Both of my parents passed away at the age of 73, neither one had been active or did intentional exercise. I started thinking about that as I approached their age. I needed to start using things before I lose them. I have lost over 100 pounds since the beginning of my journey.
Why do you choose to continue to be a part of Get You In Shape?
I love that they meet you where you are. There is no intimidation to be as good as the next person. There is lots of encouragement. It is friendly, you can work at your own level. There is a sense of camaraderie, and friendly accountability – accountability of just showing up. I have made friends through the program. We do things together off the clock including races outside the program.
What new goals or “So Thats” have you set?
In my 20’s I did runs and hadn’t for over 30 years, and I wanted to get back. When I started I could only run from one light post to the next, then had to walk. I completed my first 5K in June, 2019. In January of 2022, I set a goal of running 24 5K’s in one year. I just completed number 12, so I have done 12 in 6 months. Next goal will be on time improvement.
