Food writer and public relations maven Jill Silva of Kansas City eats out — a lot. It’s a big part of her job.

She’s trying to establish healthier habits, at restaurants and at the gym. Here, Silva, 60, offers a few pointers for responsibly enjoying restaurants.

Let’s expand on the tips for eating out:

1. Allow yourself to enjoy it (within boundaries).

When dining out, the experience should be enjoyable. It’s a treat, and you don’t need to restrict yourself to just a salad unless that’s what you genuinely want. However, enjoy the indulgence within reasonable boundaries. Consider sharing a rich dish, savoring a small dessert, or choosing one course to splurge on while keeping the others lighter. The key is balance—enjoying something special while not overindulging to the point of discomfort or regret.

2. Ask questions about what’s on the menu.

Taking the time to inquire about how a dish is prepared and what ingredients are used can make a huge difference in your dining experience. This practice not only helps you avoid ingredients that might not align with your dietary preferences or restrictions but also allows you to make more informed and healthier choices. Don’t hesitate to ask if a dish can be prepared differently—such as grilled instead of fried—or if sauces can be served on the side. Many restaurants are happy to accommodate your needs.

3. Favor real food over processed components.

Choosing dishes made from fresh, whole ingredients rather than processed ones can significantly impact your health. Processed foods often contain additives, preservatives, and unhealthy fats that are best avoided. If the restaurant staff can’t tell you how a dish is made or where the ingredients come from, it’s a red flag. Opt for items that are freshly prepared and focus on meals that include whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of vegetables. If you’re out grocery shopping, apply the same principle—purchase fresh bread from a bakery instead of pre-packaged loaves full of preservatives.

4. Remember that higher-end restaurants serve reasonably sized portions.

Portion control is a critical factor in maintaining a healthy diet. High-end restaurants often serve portions that are satisfying but not excessive. In contrast, many casual dining chains are known for oversized portions that encourage overeating. By choosing a restaurant that prioritizes quality over quantity, you can enjoy your meal without the guilt of overindulging. If you do find yourself with a large portion, don’t feel obligated to finish it—ask for a to-go box and enjoy the rest later.

5. Support local farmers and grow your own produce.

Supporting local farmers not only benefits the environment and local economy but also often means fresher, more flavorful food. When you choose restaurants that source their ingredients locally, you’re likely to enjoy meals made with seasonal, high-quality produce. If you have the space and opportunity, growing some of your own produce can be a rewarding way to ensure you’re eating fresh, nutrient-rich foods. Plus, nothing beats the taste of homegrown fruits and vegetables.
