What was your life like before Get You In Shape?

Life before GYIS was a loop of tiredness, lack of motivation, and lack of focus.  I am an early morning person, and I was already awake at 5 AM scrolling social media.  I’d spend all day working on the computer, tired. Then, I’d be too tired to do anything fun in the evenings after work.  

Why did you decide to join the Get You In Shape program?

This is my second time with GYIS.  My neighbor recommended the program, I joined years ago after I had my first child but left when pregnant with my second and my work schedule changed.  I was in the best shape of my life.  I knew I had to make a change when my eye doctor recommended I get my cholesterol checked.  Who knew eye doctors could tell these things!?!  I came back to GYIS because I knew I needed the accountability, and I knew it worked!

What was your first impression from the Get You In Shape Program?

The first week I realized how out of shape I was.  I also remember the trainers saying Good Morning Beth my second workout.  It’s small, but that gesture really made me feel part of a community again.  Within a month, there were glimpses of the workout getting easier.  Now, six months in, I feel stronger and more able to push myself during a workout.

What have been some of the tools you have used that have benefitted you?

I’ve noticed I need to move. There have been days I’ve missed a workout and I feel a difference in my ability to focus or I don’t sleep as well. Now when I’m feeling like I can’t focus, I will do some of the exercises I’ve learned, and I come back to my tasks with more focus. Or I’ve just started completing the online workout when I miss a group workout.

How is Get You In Shape different from other programs you have tried before? 

It’s different because it’s a place where they know you; the result is accountability.  Someone notices when I’m there; so they must notice when I’m not there, although I’ve only been kindly “welcomed back” once when I missed several workouts due to illness.

The program had me really take the time to think about and document why I’m working out, which is a good reminder on days when I struggle to want to workout.

What results and benefits have you experienced with Get You In Shape?

Within the first month, I lost five pounds, and after six months I’ve lost 13.  I’m fitting in my clothes, and I’ve had to buy a size smaller, which was one of my goals.  The pounds are just an easy measurement, but I really feel a lot stronger!  While I haven’t yet had my cholesterol rechecked, my doctor has noted the weight loss as a positive sign.  

What would you say to anyone looking to join the program? 

I always tell people about the group dynamics.  You find your people!  If you need to workout with someone who occasionally groans after the trainer explains the next exercise, come stand next to me!  If you want to workout next to someone who is training for their next marathon, you’ll find them here too.   Whoever are your people, you’ll find everyone here is motivated to feel better.
