Coppell Personal Trainer Client Spotlight Ken Whisler

Ken Whisler is an Area Manager for a mortgage company (LoanPeople). He lives in Coppell.

What was your life like before Get You In Shape?

I have been off and on with fitness/running through the years. I always found it hart to stay motivated for long stretches. During COVID, I began working from home 100% and found that I was very inactive and lacked basic physical strength.

Why did you decide to join the Get You In Shape program?

I have known of GYIS for years and have a lot of respect for Brad. I finally just decided to give it a shot. I wanted to get stronger and lose a little weight.

What was your first impression of Get You In Shape?

I started with the 5:30pm classes and enjoyed the energy that Billy brought to the sessions even when he was not teaching. I found that some things were pretty easy but many basic things were challenging. It was fun.

What have been some of the tools you have used that have benefitted you?

The routine is the best tool! I have also learned some of the basic stretching and core exercises that I had not been taught previously. The stretching was very helpful this past Fall as I prepared for my most recent half marathon. 

How is Get You In Shape different from other programs you have tried before?

I have not tried other programs before. Prior to GYIS, I would typically go to the CORE and wander through my own workouts. What I realize now was that it was kind of a waste of time because it was slow and inconsistent.

What results and benefits have you experienced with Get You In Shape?

While I would love to lose 20-25 pounds, I am not traditionally good with limiting my diet and focusing on what I eat (calories, carbs, vegetables, etc). What I have seen the benefits of is my strength and some redistribution of my weight. I have suits and sport coats that were no longer fitting in 2019/2020 and now fit well again across my belly. I also got back to walking/running with the 200 mile challenge and that led me to doing my 3rd half marathon and my first since 2018. While ramping up my miles, I found that my legs were stronger than they were 5 years ago when I was only running and not doing strength training. The end result was an 18 minute improvement on my half marathon time. Lastly, I have struggled with anxiety over the past 15-20 years. The stresses of fatherhood and a career managing large teams have been a struggle for me. The mortgage industry in particular has a lot of highs and lows which have overwhelmed me at times. Having an exercise routine has helped me with a physical outlet and mental distraction from the day to day struggles.

What would you say to anyone looking at this program?

The program is not about pounding out heavy weights or showing off. No one is there judging the person next to them or any of the other stuff you see in a gym. It is very good for people in the 40+ demographic that are uncomfortable or embarrassed in gyms and just want to get moving again. The program is a fast paced hour and the instructors are very positive and encouraging.
