Where Are They Now Client Spotlight – Cynthia & Reymund Zuniga

Reymund and Cynthia Zuniga are both retired and live in a townhome in Lewisville. They joined GYIS 3 years ago in January 2021

What was your life like before Get You In Shape?

We had tried Weight Watchers, a personal trainer and various diets but nothing had worked long term.

Reymund – as a type 2 diabetic, I was taking 3 medications to keep my A1C numbers in check.

Cynthia – Before I joined GYIS I was not exercising regularly and was stuck on trying to lose weight. I really didn’t have a good plan on eating healthy.

What was your reason or “So That” for joining the Get You In Shape program?

We knew we wanted to start traveling and in 2018 we had become grandparents so we wanted to get in better shape to travel and keep up with our now 4 grandbabies.

Cynthia – I needed something structured to help me to lose weight and tone as I get older. We like to travel and it’s not easy carrying extra weight around.

Walk us through your initial GYIS journey.

Reymund – I lost 23 lbs in the first 90 days and a total of 34 lbs at my low point that first year. In year 2 my doctor reduced my medication to only Metformin and only ½ the original dose.

Cynthia – Initially I lost 10 lbs in the first 3 months but then kind of stalled weight loss wise but more importantly loved the workouts which is big for me. I don’t like going to a gym so working out outside was a big plus and seeing results in inches lost and toning and getting stronger kept me motivated.

After your initial results, give us an update of what you have accomplished since then.

Reymund – 2 ½ years after joining GYIS, I had lost so much weight, and improved my strength and cardio so much, my doctor declared my diabetes “in remission” and took me off Metformin. We just had our 3 year anniversary with GYIS and I’m down 36 lbs from my original weight, including 7 inches off my waist.

Cynthia – Just had my 3 year anniversary with GYIS during which I was sidelined for several months before and after a hip replacement in January 2023. This was my second hip replacement and the recovery was much quicker I feel like because I was in better shape this time. To date I’m down 24 lbs and have lost 21 inches. I’m definitely stronger than I have been in a long time and have more energy.

How did you do in the 8 week F.A.T. program and how did it help you?

Reymund – We joined the F.A.T. Method program in July 2023 and I was able to lose 16 lbs in the 8 weeks. This was especially helpful as I had gone backwards over the summer!

Cynthia – During the initial 8 weeks of F.A.T. I lost 7 lbs but have continued with the program off and on and have lost an additional 8 lbs. I feel like it’s a good way to keep control of my weight fluctuations.

Why do you choose to continue to be a part of  Get You In Shape after 3 years?

Reymund – I’m very pleased with my 3 year results and I feel this is my best way to keep my diabetes in remission!

Cynthia- I really enjoy the classes and it holds me accountable to get my workout done.

What do you feel have been some of the keys that have helped you throughout the journey?

Reymund – The original plan booklet, the introduction of the F.A.T. program and effectively using my “So That’s”.

Cynthia – Going to class on a regular basis and doing the F.A.T. Program was a good addition. I’ve never really taken my measurements before and this is a good way to see results other than the scale.

What new goals or “So That’s” have you set?

Reymund – I have not reached my original “Audacious Goal” I set when I joined but it’s within reach!

Cynthia – Now that I’m down to a new weight level that I haven’t seen in years, it’s motivating me to continue dong the F.A.T. Method and doing the workouts consistently. Heading to a ski trip in February which was one of my very first So That’s.
